What is the best hatchback – A white hatchback in a parking lot

We like to think of our hatchbacks for sale as the Goldilocks of cars. Where high-riding SUVs can suffer from swaying body motion, and sedans can be plagued by limited trunk space, the humble hatchback combines the versatility of an SUV with the engaging driving dynamics of a smaller car. This combination kills two birds with one stone, appeasing our logical left brain and emotional right.

We’re not the only ones with such a high opinion of these cars, as their popularity has been skyrocketing for decades. But what is the best hatchback? While we can’t give you any definitive answers, we have compiled a list of our favourite hatchbacks for 2024.

Kia Rio

If you’re looking for an affordable and reliable hatchback, the Kia Rio could be a perfect fit. While many of its competitors have been replaced by larger crossovers, the Rio still stands strong as one of the best subcompact hatchbacks on the market today.

The Rio features a 120-hp inline-four attached to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Despite its modest power, its well-tuned suspension still makes for an enjoyable drive. As one of the cheapest cars on the market, the Rio’s standard features make it an attractive option for those on a budget.

Honda Civic

For many years, the answer to the question “What is the best hatchback?” was straightforward, with models like the Ford Focus and Fiesta dominating the market. However, with these models now heading to vehicular Valhalla, it has opened a lane for the Honda Civic to take pole position in the market.

The Honda Civic has been a go-to choice for budget-conscious buyers for many years. With the latest generation, including the 2023 model, Honda has continued this legacy and taken it further. The car boasts attractive interior trim and various features that were once luxury. Simply put, it’s a great hatchback at an even better price.

Mazda 3

Although priced like most modest hatchbacks, the 2023 Mazda 3 aims higher. Its mature, measured, and minimalistic design has it punching above its weight against more premium models.

With the Mazda 3, you can choose between two four-cylinder engines: a punchy turbo without manual transmission or an automatic all-wheel drive. But trust us, you’re going to want the manual!

What makes the Mazda 3 one of the best hatchbacks in 2024 is its pervading sense of reserved luxury. From its supple ride to its stylish interior and performance motor, the Mazda 3 offers understated luxury with a price to match.

Abarth 500e

The Abarth 500e is an electric hot hatch, and we mean that literally. This electrically powered hatchback is based on the Fiat 500 Electric while staying true to its Abarth racing roots with performance. This combination results in a super-compact EV hatchback with front-wheel drive and a design that’s a retro-modernised version of the early 50s Fiats. For petrol purists, the Abarth 500e comes with a sound generator. This feature imitates the noise of a standard combustion engine, keeping the driving experience exciting.

With a battery range on the shorter side for a modern EV, you won’t be able to do the big trips you could in a petrol hatch, but that’s not this car’s purpose anyway. The Abarth 500e is at home on city streets and suburbs, using its small and nimble nature to its advantage. Even if EVs aren’t for you, we can (and should!) celebrate this car as an innovative stride into the future of automotive excellence.

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius hatchback turns over a new leaf as it enters its fifth generation with the 2023 model. After being known as one of the least attractive cars on the market, the new Prius has emerged as a gorgeous butterfly to reclaim its throne as the best hybrid hatchback.

The new model offers up to 196 horsepower, the most to date from a Prius. The driver’s space layout of the new Prius has been completely redesigned, incorporating a more traditional approach. The cabin boasts bigger screens and enhanced features, including heated rear seats. With its low roofline, wide stance, and low seating position, the Prius has transformed into a vehicle that is worth driving.

The Prius was once the only hybrid hatchback on the market, but these days, it has plenty of competition, and with this latest model, it has finally risen to the occasion.
